I am sorry may be wrong area to post this? But looks like a white and blue diamond? Any Ideas on this one? Thanks!

I have the same one, but didn't get a clue about the unit. Possibly 317th Infantry. Do you have a name or a ASN of the soldier who owned it.

I am going to try and trace it back. It was a local auction buy, The town is of about 600 people so someone may know more about it. I will post if I find out anything. Side note: the only markings on the inside is the ZF 51 lot number. Thanks!

The Insignia is that for the Supply Coy, 318th Infantry. After some little research I found CPL STAUBER Anton Peter, ASN: 2828342, HQ Coy, 318th Infantry, prior his service with the 80th Division he was in Coy I, 344th Inf, 86th Division. Prior the 3rd Phase of the Meuse Argonne Offensive, beginning at 01-Nov-1918, the 80th received many replacements from the Depot Divisions. Born 04-Feb-1894, in Milwaukee, WI, he passed away in August 1969 and is buried in Milwaukee WI.

Here's another 80th Inf Div Helmet. Would this be B Company 320th Inf Reg? I wish I had a name to go with it, but this string has been very informational.

The shield looks completely different compared with my other 320th IR helmets. The 1st Bn shield would be red and nor green. I own more than 60 different 80th Helmets and the only Unit that used shields like this was the 305th Motor & Supply Train.

Greetings all,

Is this helmet's markings from the Supply Company, 317th Inf REGT, 80th Division? Was not sure due to the white circle. Thank you:-)

Best,

V/r Lance

P.S. I do not own this helmet.

I'm new to this hobby, correct me if I'm wrong, but many of these helmet markings appear to be added to the helmets post war. The markings don't match the condition of the helmets paint. Looks like they are painted over the natural scrapes, dents and blemishes. Especially the ones from 80thdivcollector. Frednizza's in post #78 looks authentic.

The patina of helmets vary not all of them were taken care of the same or store the same other the war. I dont see a problem with any of the helmets posted.

You are probably correct, I just look at posts 7-13 and see helmets in weathered, used condition that have complete unit markings with aging that doesn't match the shell. Unusual to see the uniform style of artwork on different helmets from different units. To me, they all look like they are from the same artist. A few others in there where the markings are painted over previous helmet damage. One would think the marking would have the same damage. Hard to tell without having them in hand. All in all, some very nice helmets.

Most ones done at the unit level were probably by the same guy or someone in an occupied town.

Two Coy I, 320th Infantry Helmets. Both are traced down to the individual doughboy. And both are obviously painted from the same artist.

HQ, Coy B, 305th Engineer Regiment. The tag on the back side is more interesting.

Two Coy E, 318th Infantry Helmets. Both painted by the same Artist. It was not uncommon that the same person within a Company or Regiment painted all helmets of the unit.

Here is a helmet from a member of the 313th MG Bn, D Company. The member was Jimy Ferraro, an Italian immigrant.

I’ve included photographs of an 80th Division grouping (helmet and tunic) and two stand-alone 80th Division helmets. Each helmet is named. It’s puzzling when according to published media the gunsight painting is attributed to artillery regiments. These three are attributed to men who served with the 313th Machine Gun Battalion. According to their histories, neither of them served in the artillery. I’ve read  “Good War, Great Men” by Andrew J. Capets and nowhere does it mention the 313th being detached and assigned to an artillery regiment.

Helmet belonged to Ward K. Knapp. He was from Potter County, PA. He served with Company A, 315th Machine Gun Battalion, 80th Division. Although the gun sighjt was originally attributed to Artillery Battalions it appears more and more that the gun sight insignia belongs to the Machine Gun

Does anyone know what this marking is?

It is similiar to the one listed in post #37 (see chart below), far right column, 4th row down.
