Similar devices are used with mortar sights and other optics. With mortars there is usually one cord/lightsource that attaches to the telescope elbow and another that used like a little flashlight to illuminate the leveling and range bubbles.

Also, Map reading battery operated light. It would clip to the steering column of several different trucks. I had one made by the AC Gilbert company
