WW2 B-17 Pilot POW Rumanian Insignia Bring Backs

These just came out of a sale.

The one is for the air force is the other Army?

This man was a B-17 pilot 99th BG shot down on a Ploiesti raid, he bailed out and was captured.

After he was repatriated he became a ferry pilot with the ATC.

The document is a 1947 testimony of how he was fed as a POW.

I don't know if anyone noticed but he spent a month and a day in captivity.

He escaped with another American and a British airmen.

A Romanian couple was instrumental in their success and he was able to reunite with them many years later after the war.

Feel free to comment especially if you know anything about the insignia.

Hey there. This isn't a direct answer to your request but thought you may find it interesting and relative if you didn't already know the story....but have you heard of "Operation Gunn" at the end of WWII when the commander of the 454th, James Gunn was flown back to his base by a Romanian fighter ace leading to a large rescue of US airmen pows? I have an original photo taken at the 454th base of that 109.

Did you get any of his POW mail he sent from Romania? They are normally preprinted postcards. I have a few.

Hi Kurt,

The family has 2 cards they are looking for plus all the combat zone mail is in the house someplace.

It's a pretty nice group but no A2 or squadron patch.

Great story Paul.

Very interesting how the transition took place.
