McDermut99 Posted August 27, 2018 Share #1 Posted August 27, 2018 I'll be traveling to Houston for the upcoming weekend, and was wondering if anyone has suggestions of surplus stores, antique stores, and the like that are good places to do some militaria hunting. I'm focusing of WWI and WWII but I'm open to all suggestions! If there are any museums, monuments, or landmarks that are military related I'm interested in visiting places like that as well! Many thanks for any suggestions!
easterneagle87 Posted August 27, 2018 Share #2 Posted August 27, 2018 My daughter went to college at McNeeese State in Lake Charles, LA. To visit, my wife and I would fly into Houiston and drive over. There is a big flea mart on the east side of town that has a BIG white elephant in front of it. I never got to stop and regretted never making the stop. It looked like it has potential. Happy hunting!

vzemke Posted September 8, 2018 Share #4 Posted September 8, 2018 If your ever back in that area, I think the USS Texas is the best military history monument in the area. Its on the outskirts of town, but worth the drive. The ship is older than other battleships on display across the country, being built in 1911. It provided naval gun fire support to both D-Day and Iwo Jima.

The guide we were with let us take a few extra peeks down inside the No. 2 turret, which was quite amazing. I can't imagine being in there when those guns were fired. I didn't even explore the entire ship and I was amazed at her beauty and history. Unfortunately the water in that area is absolute crap (literally to a certain degree) and the hull is deteriorating rapidly. They're making efforts to raise a cool $50 million or so to permanently dry dock her, however there are certain voices in the Texas Legislature who'd prefer she be stripped and scrapped. That would cost at least $30 Million. All they can do until then is patch what they can and have huge pumps running 24/7. The last I heard they pump out approximately 30,000 gallons of water every day. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/opinion/outlook/article/Congress-can-help-Battleship-Texas-stay-afloat-12945310.php
