103OVI Posted August 24, 2018 Share #1 Posted August 24, 2018 While looking through a local thrift store, I came across a box filled with field gear. Most of it was modern Rothco type military lookalike camping gear, but towards the bottom I found two beautiful examples of late Vietnam gear. One is a 1968 plastic snap nylon canteen cover with a 1970 canteen, and the other is a 1969 dated Ames trifold shovel in a 1970 dated carrier. Both have aluminum slide keepers, and the plastic snaps have hardly a scratch on them.

268th C.A. Posted August 24, 2018 Share #5 Posted August 24, 2018 Very nice gear for sure! Here is the crazy thing, I have collected mint web gear most of my life, but when it came to Vietnam gear its mostly all been used gear ? Does that make any since....?? I guess the new term is salty...Great post.

Bob Hudson Posted August 24, 2018 Share #7 Posted August 24, 2018 Here's a ton of info on these nylon canteen covers of that era: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/267297-the-one-quart-nylon-water-canteen-cover-1966-1976/
103OVI Posted August 25, 2018 Author Share #8 Posted August 25, 2018 Great finds! The 1969 shovel has me drooling on my keyboard. Mikie It nearly made me jump! Here are some better pictures. Interestingly, the shovel head is black, but the anodizing on the aluminum handle is almost a very dark purple, although Im unsure if the photo will show the difference. I also played around with the contrast to make the contract information easier to read.
