36thIDAlex Posted July 27, 2018 Share #1 Posted July 27, 2018 Saw this one for sale recently. Seems a little too nice in my experience but I am no expert in this area. GEN. David R. 36thIDAlex Posted July 27, 2018 Author Share #2 Posted July 27, 2018 The seller deals mostly in jewelry and in many other photos of his items they appear just as shiny, I presume he uses a lot of lighting which might make it appear this way. 268th C.A. Posted July 27, 2018 Share #3 Posted July 27, 2018 Over the years I have told countless jewelry dealers at show or flea market not to polish military insignia as collectors love the patina. They polish their jewelry. So instinctively the polish insignia. Which I believe is the case here. Good luck! Pvt. James H. Honey 1st Md. Eastern shore Vol. Inf. Co. D (union) Gettysburg Pvt. They polish their jewelry. So instinctively the polish insignia. Which I believe is the case here. Good luck! Thanks, I went ahead and picked it up as it was listed at a really surprising price. I wish it wasn’t polished but at the price I got it I don’t mind. The PT Uniform I have originally had one with it but it was split at the auction. From what I can tell I believe he had shined his a little since he took it off the uniform and wore it to reunions sometimes so I think this one will work just fine. GEN. David R. 12A54 Posted July 27, 2018 Share #6 Posted July 27, 2018 When badges were actually worn, they were polished. Patina looks nice, but it isn’t necessarily representative of anything but oxidation over the years.
36thIDAlex Posted July 31, 2018 Author Share #7 Posted July 31, 2018 The pin came in today, it actually looks very nice on the uniform, and exactly where the vet wore his back in the day. The patina is all still on the back but the front has indeed been shined up a bit. GEN. David R. Atchinson- MO State Guard ACW PVT. John H. Drury- Co. A, 27th Ky IR ACW Died of Typhoid PVT. Henry E. Oh yes I did not expect it to be that large, and those are 1/2 inch ribbons! Thanks everyone for the help, I was glad to finally complete this sailors uniform to the time of his discharge.
