Hello all -

I just picked up 2 WWII dated us army canteens - one Vollrath 1943 and the other TACU Co. dated 1942. Interesting to note that the TACU canteen is about a half inch taller than the Vollrath. Is this possible? I never have noticed such a thing before.

Best,

Bill K.

I forget why they made that variation, but some were produced with a sort of 'shelf' where the cap screws on, plus the Vollrath is a flat lid, as opposed to the later style lid on the TACU Co.

Yes, I noted the "shelf" but you can still see that the canteens are differently shaped and clearly the TACU is overall taller. I am going to start going through all my canteens now and see if I can find others with this anomaly.

The real way to tell is if you post a picture of the two canteens with the caps removed. The only thing clear in the posted picture is that one cap is taller than the other.

  • 2 weeks later...

Had several of the TACU 42 and they typically have the early flat cap.

Im sure with surplus sales and caps getting broken any comination will be found.
