1canpara Posted July 26, 2018 Share #1 Posted July 26, 2018 So, I was in a Nordstrom store in Seattle last week and spotted a duck hunter pattern camo jacket in the menswear, could not believe the price tag! I know this is nothing new, selling military themed clothing at designer prices, but I found this particular item very interesting So heres some 60s commercially made duck hunter camo that I bought from a forum member for about $65, I dont know if it was ever used in VN or not, but it displays very nicely. ...and for comparison, heres what the fashion houses are selling for stupidly high prices, like $495! kammo-man Posted July 26, 2018 Share #3 Posted July 26, 2018 Look no further than the post below named Finally found an original USMC cammo cap. The poster didnt want to believe that someone could actually make caps from original cammo fabric and sell them to fashion guys for actual day time wear. Military surplus use by civilians is as old as time. When original surplus drys up then its simply invented and manufactured. I was at a shop in LA this week that had at least 20 unissued USMC WW2 ponchos in stock. They also had a bin full of caps made from the ponchos. On the flip side I have an original Vietnam made 2 piece suit and cap made from the same fabric so the concept isnt that new. owen

gwb123 Posted July 26, 2018 Share #7 Posted July 26, 2018 Civilian wear of military clothing goes back decades and perhaps even longer. In the Old West, back in the days when people had few pieces of clothing, we've all seen pictures of former military wear converted to civilian use. Post WWI outdoors men, travelers and tradespeople wore military clothing because it was durable. Perhaps the biggest use of it was post WWII and Korea when former military members wore their khaki trousers on campus while earning their degrees under the GI Bill. Surplus stores also helped this trend. Why spend big bucks on a long winter coat when you could get a cheap one surplus? Fatigue and camo clothing became a hallmark of the anti-war movement, as well as the hip cool surfer set. What we are seeing now is with a lack of real surplus niche manufactures coming out with both high and low end fashion items to fill the need. gwb123 Posted July 26, 2018 Share #8 Posted July 26, 2018 I'm curious, Owen. In that shop photo, how much of that camo was original and how much of it was modern remanufactured?

Old Marine Posted July 26, 2018 Share #13 Posted July 26, 2018 Some of the retro stuff is pretty cool. Old Navy, Macy's, Marshall's and Burlington are just full of fashion Camo, it's very trendy now. In the 60s my father was a plumber, at the construction sites all the work clothes were surplus, Army HBTs, Marine Camo, HBT coveralls, khaki trousers, 41, and 43 field jackets, low quarter boots, double buckle boots, navy boondockers, dungarees and blue shirts as well as A2s and G1 jackets. In the cold weather I saw the USAAF sheepskin lined leather Bomber coveralls and jackets. The stuff was cheap and plentiful.

Spike Posted July 30, 2018 Share #21 Posted July 30, 2018 I've been to that store. Some cool items but WAY over priced. It's for those with too much money and not enough sense.....the Hollywood/entertainment/self entitled crowd.
shawnmt6601 Posted July 31, 2018 Share #22 Posted July 31, 2018 I swear, some of those old vintage commercial camo/surplus used cloth has its own charm and I dont know why. Back in the 80s I would look at the various commercial made "duckhunter" type camo and roll my eyes, Now for some reason I find that It has it's own appeal. nostalgia I guess. Or maybe just tired of seeing digital patterns everywhere

mikie Posted August 3, 2018 Share #24 Posted August 3, 2018 If you can stand the shock, here is a picture of me in front of the famous Moffett Field Hangar 1. I'm wearing a desert camo boonie I picked up about a year ago. I was surprised when my 18 year old daughter first saw it and said it was cool. And that it was in style now with kids her age. I couldn't believe that I was actually, for the first time in my 60 years, on top of a fashion trend! Plus it keeps the sun off my bald spot. Function AND Fashion!
