Raider patch in question

Recommended Posts

Is this a real 1st Raider Company 8245th AU GHQ? Could it be for the for the 8th Army 8213th AU or 10th Corps 8227th Raider Companies?

I've had it for years and years. I can't remember where or when I got it for sure but think I got it in the '50's in San Francisco. Like I said I am not sure. I just can't remember. (Getting old is a bitch and isn't for sissies!) I do know that I didn't pick it up from the 1980's to present

White thread glows. White threads melt. Red threads burn.

Patch is some what thin and soft and supple.

For all I know it could be for a Community College Marching Band in TX!

I will post a scan of the reverse. Can't fit it with this post.

Here is the scan of the reverse. There is white glue residue on lettering. I put it there. My bad!

The base material looks OG wool to my old eyes.

High Flight

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth

And danced the skies on laughter-silver wings;

Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth

Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung

High in the sunlit silence. Hovering there

I've chased the shouting wind along and flung

My eager craft through footless halls of air.

Up, up the long delirious, burning blue

I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace,

where never lark, or even eagle flew;

and while, with silent, lifting mind I've trod

The high untrespassed sanctity of space,

Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Greetings,

Just spoke with the Chief, JROTC for our Brigade (benefit of working at a SROTC BDE HQ, I guess) and asked him about this tab. He indicated that participants in the Raider Competition earn an "arc" for their dress uniform that resembles the gold/black one in the picture but it is made of metal. He said there is not a cloth tab/arc that he is aware of but some schools may make them as "morale patches" out of their own budget. It is also not an SROTC piece.

Best,

Peter

When I wrote my article on the Pagan Raiders each battional of the 179th Infantry Regiment had teams that patrol, probe, and raid. At the time I had a shirt that had the 3rd PAGAN RAIDER bn tab above the 45th Division patch. I was fortunate enough to interview a former member that was from the 1st Bn. Their Pagan Raider's tab was just RAIDER. Never learnt what the 2nd Bn scroll/tab was like however if you state that this was something you picked during the 50's it is possible what you have is a Pagan Raider's tab.
