hink441 Posted July 24, 2018 Share #1 Posted July 24, 2018 I was able to get a second VA-42 helmet for my collection. This one is different from the first one, it has a boom microphone attachment on the right side of the helmet. It also has what looks like a rigger modified chin strap and nape strap. It is not named and appears to be a small size. I think this one was intended for the A-1 Skyraider. This squadron flew both the A-6 and the A-1 in the early to mid 1960s. Here is a link to the thread covering the first helmet. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/287292-va-42-helmet/ Here is a few pics of the new helmet. horridohutch Posted July 24, 2018 Share #4 Posted July 24, 2018 Nice! The helmet hunt has been slim lately for me. We will see what the future holds!
hink441 Posted July 24, 2018 Author Share #5 Posted July 24, 2018 Thanks, Now I need to locate a visor knob and a boom mic. I wonder if there is a significance to the different colors of the lightning bolts on the visor covers. Could one color be for A-6s and the other for A-1s ??? hink441 Posted September 29, 2019 Author Share #6 Posted September 29, 2019 Found this picture online. A VA-42 Aviator strapping into his A-1 Skyraider with the help of his Plane Captain. Helmet is similar to my two posted helmets, notice the different type O2 mask fittings (snaps).
AMT500E Posted October 22, 2019 Share #7 Posted October 22, 2019 Thanks, Now I need to locate a visor knob and a boom mic. I wonder if there is a significance to the different colors of the lightning bolts on the visor covers. Could one color be for A-6s and the other for A-1s ??? Chris or maybe could be that the material color on hand to do the bolts at that time was what they had available on location?
AMT500E Posted October 22, 2019 Share #8 Posted October 22, 2019 On second thought, my analogy probably is wrong.
