747th Amphibian Tank Bn

There is a seller on Ebay who bought a large bullion collection recently after a good friend of his tried to talk him out of it. Here is one of the patches up for sale on Ebay:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-747th-Amphibian-Tank-Battalion-patch-German-Made-Bullion-Variation/352406098061?hash=item520d0a508d%3Ag%3A1fEAAOSw6AlbS%7Er-&_fsrp=1&_sop=10&_dmd=2&_trkparms=pageci%3D4e4fc5b0-d702-4f96-848f-118d93cd8ccb%2Cparentrq%3Dca69c63f1560abd8d4b07376fffeaeac%2Ciid%3D1%2Cobjectid%3D156440&rt=nc

This is very similar to two armor patches I mistakenly bought approx. 20 years ago from another Ebay seller who lives in the east. He has a reputation for selling one-of-a-kind elite unit patches, which frequently feature bullion. In any case, the two armor patches I bought - 713th Tank Bn (Armored Flamethrower) and 738th Tank Bn had similar yellow tabs and the red and blue were both the same material as the yellow tabs - but these are embr and the yellow tab is similar to the 713th and 738th. The 713th was on an Ike, pretty rare for a unit on occupation duty in Korea 1945. There was a ribbon rack which incl a PH ribbon. We all know clothing was reissued, but arrmed with a 713th roster I had, I verified no one in the unit and esp no in the unit w/ a PH had the laundry data (there were 3-4, can't remember). That two patches made exactly the same existed for units several thousand miles apart signed off the deal and I returned them.

This 747th looked exactly like those two, except for the bullion highlights. Now, even though the seller correctly lists the unit as "amphibian", the patch tab says "amphibious" and even has an LVT-(X) on it. In the ETO, the 747th and 80th Tank Bns were attached to a Special Amphibian Bde for training for the invasion of Japan. (There was a third tank bn which escapes me at this time). Neither the 80th (which has its own little known patch) nor the 747th used any LVT-(X). They used their M-4 Shermans. In fact, the 747th was not re-equipped with any LVT4s until it was reactivated during the KW. The maker of this patch knew the 747th was redesignated, but did not use the correct redesignation on the tab and included a mythical tracked armored vehicle to boot.

This seller pulled a 504th armor patch that is equally mind blowing (he couldn't squeeze TD in there?):

In regard to these two, IMO, there is a difference between post war c. 1946 and 2000. Oh, I have thoughts on the other items. We'll let others chime in.

I love and collect bullion patches. I wouldn't bid on any of them, just my IMHO.

I've looked at the other auctions and they looked pretty farfetched in my opinion. But a couple look good. Like the 34th theater made patch. That looks good. Something about the bullion that looks funny. It's funny I used to correspond with the seller years ago, we both we're grabbing up new old stock patches from Kaufmans army Navy store in NYC. All in original bundles. My gut feeling is there not real.

If the 747 armored patch were real. Why would the German manufacturer take a US embroidered no numbered armor patch, attach it to an American piece of wool and then add bullion over the top of the patch with an American made khaki backing material to the bullion? That is not the German way of doing things.

These are the work of a faker who moved on from making patches of old material and selling one at a time on ebay a few years back, to enhancing common patches with bullion. He goes back a long time. Seller is honest, but was duped by unsuspecting collector. I examined some of the patches at a show last weekend, and all were done by same hand. Told him, that patches did not match style of materials of theater of origin, but he obviously thinks he knows better.

I am with you brother. These patches have taxed a friendship of more than two decades. He is truly honest but is not part of main stream and does not stay ahead of the market and frauds. He sadly reflects the mentality of long time collectors who have their ideas of who is reputable and who they trust. Very much explains why some major problem dealers remain viable. I showed him how they should be made and which ones are real. He pulled amphib after I sent the thread. He does want to do right thing
