avigo Posted July 11, 2018 Share #1 Posted July 11, 2018 Just curious if the Navy also used the Willys in WWII, if not, what vehicles were they using for general transport around bases, etc.? Thanks! PS. I can't change the title, but also curious what vehicles were used by the US Navy in WWI

turmanator Posted June 8, 2022 Share #7 Posted June 8, 2022 I actually read somewhere that the Navy never had any contracts with Ford for GPWs and used only Willys MBs. Dont know the validity though
RustyCanteen Posted June 9, 2022 Share #8 Posted June 9, 2022 The US Navy did actually have a small contract for 500 or so Ford GPW's around August 1942. Most of the USMC jeeps I have seen in period photos are distinctly WIllys MB though. I believe the US Navy actually obtained a few thousand jeeps throughout the war via the US Army's contracts. Sometimes it was easier for them to allocate some from an already signed contract than to load up the manufacturers with competing contracts to different branches.
