doyler Posted July 10, 2018 Share #2 Posted July 10, 2018 As I recall in 1925 the Army prescribed wear of the open collar for the Air Service and in 1926 for all other personnel.
MattS Posted July 10, 2018 Share #3 Posted July 10, 2018 I was thinking 1926 as well.
doyler Posted July 10, 2018 Share #4 Posted July 10, 2018 There may be variations in the period as well due to sl modifications done by some who converted existing uniforms from standing to open collar.
SocietyBrandHatCo Posted July 10, 2018 Share #5 Posted July 10, 2018 December 1926 service wide, however, National Guard units were not completely outfitted in new uniforms until 1931.

FWIW, I have a Virginia NG Class A Coat, a Captain (29th Division Dentist), open collar, tailor-made....hand-dated 1/14/1925.

SocietyBrandHatCo Posted July 11, 2018 Share #8 Posted July 11, 2018 Not unusual for a National Guard officer to put his own non-regulation touches on a tailor made uniform. For the guardsmen who may not have been so well to do, the last units to relinquish the WWI vintage uniforms with choker collars was in 1931. Allan H. Posted July 11, 2018 Share #9 Posted July 11, 2018 If you ever read Bill Mauldin's "The Brass Ring" he recounts wearing WWI uniforms complete with high collar and puttees after the 45th Division was federalized in 1939! Additionally, the US Army Museum at FT Leavenworth used to have a WWI vintage uniform on display that was worn in the early days of WWII as well. When you are talking National Guard units during the Great Depression, the units used whatever they had available and if that included wearing WWI vintage uniforms, that is what they did. Allan I seem to recall seeing a picture recently of George S. Patton being decorated from 1926, and he is still wearing the WW1 high-collar...... BEAST Posted July 11, 2018 Share #11 Posted July 11, 2018 This close up is from a photo I posted a while ago. It comes from a group photo taken in 1928 of the 1st Cavalry Regiment. The soldier is still wearing the 1924 pattern coat with the high collar and the gilt buttons.
