Serifed M1905 SA Bayonet Serial Number

I have a 1906 dated Springfield Armory 1905 Model U.S. Bayonet with a serial number of 41242 with an altered and pommel marked catch, and a fully blued or parkerized blade. Most everything with the bayonet looks legitimate to me, except for the serifed serial numbers. From the references I have seen, all SA 1905 bayonets had non-serifed serial numbers. I know it is common to see pre-1917 manufactured M1905 bayonets that have had their blades blued or parkerized during or post WWI, but I have not found anything documenting the existence serifed SA serial numbers. Is there anyone who might have any information on the existence of serifed SA serial numbers, or if this might be a case of a very well done reproduction bayonet?

I have 2 M1905 bayonets dated 1906 and both have serif letters and numbers. One pictured below., I also have a 1907 dated M1905 that has non-serif letters and numbers. I believe that SA changed to non-serif in 1907. This was also done to the M1904 Hospital bolos; they had serif letters and numbers prior to 1910. 1910 and after they were non-serif.

My early SA 1906 dated bayonet has a serifed number. My 1908, 1919,and 1920 (the only other SAs I have) all are sans serif.

Serifed 1905s are obviously out there. I do not know whether or not other dates have serifs.

According to Gary Cunningham's CD from April 2014, Springfield Armory used serifed numbers during most of the 1906 production. However, he also shows an SA 1906 without serifs with a serial number 181569.

Thank you both for the pictures and addtional information. I feel better knowing that serifed serial numbers on 1906 manufactured bayonets are out there.

What is a serifed serial number? Thanks

Hi,

The bayonet numbers you see in the above posts are serifed. It's the little doo dads on the letters. Think "fancy" vs. "plain".

This picture has non-serifed numbers. The proper term is sans-serif.

Odd that only the US marking has serif's and the SA does not. Maybe a transition year? I'll check a few of mine.

I don't have a 1907 or 1908, but this 1909 has serif's on the US only:post-2137-0-78967700-1581636982_thumb.jpgpost-2137-0-56285700-1581637003_thumb.jpg

Slightly off-topic, but still relevant, this 1913 Patton Saber has no serifs at all. So roughly, we could say 1906 everything had serifs, by 1908 only the US marking was serif'd, and by 1912 or 1913 the serifs were gone. Does this sound correct?post-2137-0-27822400-1581637775_thumb.jpg

Sorry, last pic was too large to add, so 1 more post to see it.

Edited after looking closer at the collection:

XM1906 sabers made at Springfield in 1906 have serif SA, US, and serial number.

My XM1911 saber made in 1911 has non-serif SA, serif US, and non-serif serial number.

My M1913 #112 has non-serif SA, serif US, and non-serif serial number.

My photo of M1913 #193 has non-serif SA, US, and serial number.

So, Springfield stopped using serif SA and number dies between 1906 and 1911, stopped using the serif US sometime in the second quarter of 1913.
