Frogskin7 Posted June 18, 2018 Share #1 Posted June 18, 2018 Does anyone know if early high pressure liners (Westinghouse Rayon Liners for example) were used on Tarawa? Is there any photographic evidence?
Burning Hazard Posted June 18, 2018 Share #2 Posted June 18, 2018 Lot's of Hawley liners in footage, but I came across this photo showing marines en route to Tarawa, you can see one is wearing a high pressure liner. Pat

Grant G. Posted June 18, 2018 Share #4 Posted June 18, 2018 It's also possible that is a low pressure liner (St. Clair or Hood Rubber).

Burning Hazard Posted June 19, 2018 Share #8 Posted June 19, 2018 It's also possible that is a low pressure liner (St. Clair or Hood Rubber). Grant, I think you may be right. Though faint, the liner appears unpainted and the exterior pattern reminds me of a Hood Rubber liner, could possibly be one! Pat
Burning Hazard Posted June 19, 2018 Share #9 Posted June 19, 2018 The Marinento the right looks like he doesn't have a Hawley I looked at some footage from Tarawa; lots of Hawleys everywhere but you can tell some individuals have low/high pressure liners under their shell since they lack the protrudin, bulky Hawley visor on the front. pararaftanr2 Posted June 19, 2018 Share #14 Posted June 19, 2018 A screen capture from the documentary film "With The Marines at Tarawa", showing ENS Bill Kelly, the first Navy pilot to land on the island. Note the liners on the two men at screen right.
