Allan H. Posted June 13, 2018 Share #3 Posted June 13, 2018 The name is Vernon Morgan. There are a few articles about him in the Persian Gulf. http://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=11280 Injured Iraqi Merchant Seaman Treated Aboard USS EnterpriseStory Number: NNS040106-03Release Date: 1/6/2004 11:17:00 AMBy Journalist 3rd Class Jason Thompson, USS Enterprise Public AffairsABOARD USS ENTERPRISE, At Sea (NNS) -- USS Enterprise (CVN 65) medical personnel treated an Iraqi merchant seaman who was medevaced to the aircraft carrier Jan. 2, after he was seriously injured in an accident aboard his freighter in the Arabian Gulf.He was flown back to Iraq for further treatment Jan. 4.Atif Youssif, a 36-year-old native of Basrah, Iraq, was treated for a fractured arm and chest bruises sustained when a cable parted while his ship was towing another vessel. USS Gettysburg (CG 64) answered his ship's distress call and transported him via helicopter to Enterprise.Enterprise Senior Medical Officer Capt. Vernon Morgan was among the first on scene when the helicopter landed on Enterprise's flight deck around 8:20 p.m. "I met him at the helicopter for an on-scene evaluation of the severity of his injuries," said Morgan. "We then transferred him to our main medical treatment room, where a definitive diagnosis of a displaced humerus fracture was made and treatment begun."Lt. Cmdr. Kevan Mann, Enterprise surgeon, was with Morgan on scene. "We thought it was going to be a heck of a lot worse than it was," said Mann.Communications with the patient were assisted by one of the Navy's latest innovation projects, the Phraselator. Essentially a field-rated personal digital assistant, the device translates spoken English into one of several languages, including Arabic. On the day he left Enterprise, Lt. Wendy Stone, Enterprise's nurse, treated Youssif to a meal in the officer's dining facility. "I think he was overwhelmed with the amount of food we offered him," said Stone. "He was particularly pleased with our choice of fresh vegetables."On behalf of Enterprise, Stone presented Youssif with a command ball cap, coffee mug and a box of toys to give to his two children.Gettysburg and Enterprise are part of the Enterprise Carrier Strike Group, deployed to the Navy's U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility in support of the global war on terror. For related news, visit the Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command/ Commander, 5th Fleet Navy NewsStand page at www.news.navy.mil/local/cusnc.
