ww2vault Posted November 25, 2008 Share #1 Posted November 25, 2008 Hi, This is a first aid kit made by, Mine Safety Appliances Co. and this unit is the 24 Unit type D which was used on various vehicles. I am pretty sure it's a WWII first aid kit. The cover is a little wore down but at the bottom it reads, First Aid Kit, and above it is the Mine Safety App. Co. logo, or what is left of it. Most of the contents inside are still there, some missing though. The good news is that on the underside lid is a label which specifies what the contents are, so I can go ahead and buy the replacement items. The total contents are: .:. 2 - 2in. Compresses .:. 3 - Adhesive Compresses .:. 1 - Adhesive Plaster .:. 3 - Gauze Roller Bandages .:. 1 - Eye Dressing Packet .:. Triangular Bandages .:. 1 - Absorbent Gauze Comp. .:. 1 - Wire Splint .:. Metaphen Vials .:. Metaphen Swabs .:. Ammonia Ampoules .:. Paper Cups .:. 1 - Unguentine .:. 1 - Tourniquet .:. 1 - Forceps .:. Scissors It says on the label that you can order refills from the FA catalog since they list the FA numbers for each of the items. What is a FA catalog? I have heard of FM's and EM's, but not FA's. - Jeff

Brian Keith Posted November 25, 2008 Share #3 Posted November 25, 2008 It may be WW II era, but it is not the issue kit for Army military vehicles. Some of the contents may be the same as issue, especially if the kit was used post-war and surplus supplies were put in it. BKW
Brian Keith Posted November 25, 2008 Share #4 Posted November 25, 2008 PS: Mine Safety Applience had a lot of military contracts, the made protective masks (gas masks) of various types. BKW
GICOP Posted November 25, 2008 Share #5 Posted November 25, 2008 Hi Jeff That is a pre War Mine Safety Appliances kit, all of the items shown would have appeared in various WW2 kits. Have a look at this link to the great MED-DEPT web site http://www.med-dept.com/forum/viewtopic.ph...&highlight= You will see the contents list from a MSA 36 unit kit I owned. I think you will find that FA stands for First Aid in the MSA re-order catalogue Cheers Martyn
ww2vault Posted November 26, 2008 Author Share #6 Posted November 26, 2008 Wow, thanks a lot for the information Martyn. I think you are correct in saying it is a pre-war medical kit. On one of the Gauze Roller Bandages in the case there is a copyright date on the bandage wrapper which says 1923. Would there have been a chance a kit made this early would have been used in the military during WWII? - Jeff
GICOP Posted November 26, 2008 Share #7 Posted November 26, 2008 Hi Jeff It is a certainty that the individual MSA packs would have been used. The case itself is the same size as the 24 unit armoured vehicle case but I don't think it would have been used in that capacity, but who is to say never. The MSA kit in 12 and 24 units turn up on a regular basis on Ebay so I don't think you will have any trouble at all completing the kit. AndrewA74 Posted November 26, 2008 Share #9 Posted November 26, 2008 Nice! Would that be the one on Craigslist in the Raliegh area I was looking at getting? . Just kidding, I was out of money. If I remember right, you did good on the price. Andrew
