Salvage Sailor Posted December 15, 2019 Author Share #40 Posted December 15, 2019 USS LA SALLE (AGF-3) Raleigh class amphibious transport dock (LPD-3) converted to a miscellaneous command ship in 1972 and assigned to the Persian Gulf during the reign of the Shah of Iran. LA SALLE was in commission from 1964 to 2005. Many of us on this forum will recall that she was the diplomatic flagship homeported at Bahrain in the Persian Gulf (and later flagship of COMMIDEASTFOR). She was painted white and covered with awnings to keep the hot Arabian sun off of the decks. A friend of mine served as an OS aboard her and prior to the Iranian Crisis in 1979, it was considered a hardship assignment, just like Diego Garcia and Antarctic/Arctic service. Swiss-Tex (AGF-3) patch circa 1970's USS LA SALLE (AGF-3) - She was known as the"Great White Whale" and also as the "Great White Ghost of the Arabian Coast" when home ported at Bahrain Grey & white 'Ghost' version of her patch on the bulk blank card made by Swiss Tex and sold aboard in the ships store to her crew. Quite rare to accumulate this many landings This is the '700-Traps' Centurion patch for the USS America (CV-66). You had to have a total (day & nite) of 700 arrested landings (traps) to earn this patch. These are rare and hard to come by as they were only given to the aircrew that earned them.
