rje71 Posted May 16, 2018 Share #1 Posted May 16, 2018 Anyone know when the M-17 Gas Mask with the drinking Tube was first used ?
ccyooper Posted May 17, 2018 Share #2 Posted May 17, 2018 I think about the time when the m17a1 was introduced approximately 1966/67. I believe there are some gas mask experts on the forum who can give you a more definitive answer, but that should get you in the ballpark.
one50 Posted May 21, 2018 Share #3 Posted May 21, 2018 ccyooper is spot on. The M17A1 which has the drinking tube and was introduced in 1966. The M17 has 3 basic variants. M17 (1959 - 1992) Plain ole mask. M17A1 (1966 - 1992) with water drinking system and resuscitation tube. M17A2 (1983 - 1992) with water drinking system, MINUS the resuscitation tube. You asked when was the drinking tube used...used in the front line? I look at lots of photos from that time period...66-70 and I don't recall seeing anyone using the M17A1. Start looking online at photos with dates and see what they are wearing. My guess is they were more widespread in the early 70's towards the end of the war. I try to do a little more research and find out. Thanks for asking. Dan
ECHOROMEO Posted May 21, 2018 Share #4 Posted May 21, 2018 To piggy back on the topic (I hope the OP doesn't mind), do you know the different types of carriers that were issued? From my understanding there are at least three variations but I guess there could be more.

mohawkALSE Posted June 21, 2018 Share #8 Posted June 21, 2018 I have one of the early 1Qt canteens that had the black cap with the drinking tube adapter. Was a 1969 dated canteen.

Caps like that were retrofitted to canteens with all different dates.
rje71 Posted July 8, 2018 Author Share #10 Posted July 8, 2018 Thank you to everyone for the replies and the info ! I recently came across a M17 carrying bag marked solely as M17 and not M17A1 I am guessing this is probably an early manufactured one ? RJ
Cobra 6 Actual Posted July 8, 2018 Share #11 Posted July 8, 2018 An aside: for an excellent reference on the subject check out “U.S. Chemical & Biological Defense Respirators: An Illustrated History” by Chris Carey. It came out in 2004 ... you can borrow it through interlibrary loan.
