dunmore1774 Posted May 13, 2018 Share #1 Posted May 13, 2018 I thought I'd breath some life into this area of the forum, and see if we can get more action with the Rev War Here is a nice 1763 series Charleville, with some features of the 1768 revisions. I believe France gave us around 48,000 during the war. Many of these were re-stocked during and after the war in Cherry. This one appears to have been restocked and lacks the middle barrel band. It still retains the 44 1/2" barrel, in .69 caliber. Orders were given in 1777 to mark the arms owned by Continental Congress. Some studies have been done to date the different brands/stamps used. These marks are believed to be late war or done postwar at an arsenal, possibly when it was restocked. The 1768 Charleville would be the model from which the armorers at Springfield would base the first US military model weapon, the M1795 Springfield. It's been a while since I've brushed up on my 18th centruy weapons, so feel free to chime in with more info, and post your guns to share!

Alec Posted August 21, 2018 Share #13 Posted August 21, 2018 I've got a 1763/4 Mauberge. Not surcharges, but I know about 10,000 if I recall correctly came into service. I sent pics to George Neumann many years ago and he said he believed it to be a Rev War used. I'll have to dig it out and take some pics.

71Mach Posted February 4, 2022 Share #20 Posted February 4, 2022 New to forum and found this thread …typically a WW1/2 collector but bought a rev war US surcharged Charleville musket a few years ago. I was fortunate to purchase it from a descendant of Capt Eliakim Littell of the New Jersey Militia . I also acquired the bayonet and 2 powder horns. Just thought the forum might enjoy. dunmore1774 Posted February 4, 2022 Author Share #21 Posted February 4, 2022 Always nice to see ones that survived this long. Very nice, I just wish the pictures were a little clearer. The barrel stamps are interesting. Thanks for showing😀 I'd like to see the horns too

Matt_X Posted February 5, 2022 Share #23 Posted February 5, 2022 The fully spelled out United States, as well U. States are Continental Army property stamps. The US and US in a circle in the first example I've not seen reference for and agree those are likely from the early republic.
71Mach Posted February 8, 2022 Share #24 Posted February 8, 2022 Here are a few close- up pics of the stock and powder horns. I also included a few pics of some later US militia buckles (1820's), powder Flasks, pics of musket hanging in Littell House, I also have the bed warmer, early candle mold and Revere style lantern all acquired from the Littell family. Not pictured ... a Model 1812 Eagle Head sabre with scabbard which was also part of the Littell family heirlooms.
