Colonel Sanders Posted May 9, 2018 Share #1 Posted May 9, 2018 Picked this up at a sale, not too knowledgeable about Civil War uniforms and not sure if that is what this is. I thought the chevrons faced the opposite direction of the one shown in the photo. Thanks!
manayunkman Posted May 9, 2018 Share #2 Posted May 9, 2018 Sure looks period. Could be earlier degero or ambro.
vonmoen Posted May 9, 2018 Share #3 Posted May 9, 2018 Looks period, maybe a military Cadet posing with his Father?

Colonel Sanders Posted May 9, 2018 Author Share #5 Posted May 9, 2018 Ahhh, him being a cadet never crossed my mind. Thanks for all the insights so far!
peterson45 Posted May 9, 2018 Share #6 Posted May 9, 2018 That is a beautiful tintype. Nice find!
sundance Posted May 10, 2018 Share #7 Posted May 10, 2018 Very nice. How big is it?
Colonel Sanders Posted May 10, 2018 Author Share #8 Posted May 10, 2018 1/4 Plate (so 3.25" x 4.25")
Flyboy1945 Posted May 10, 2018 Share #9 Posted May 10, 2018 Looks like a Ambrotype image. Photographs of this kind always resulted with a inverted image because it was a direct one of a kind exposure to a glass plate. The same with Daguerrotypes and Ferrotypes aka Tintypes. scottiques Posted May 12, 2018 Share #11 Posted May 12, 2018 Looks like a Ambrotype image. Photographs of this kind always resulted with a inverted image because it was a direct one of a kind exposure to a glass plate. The same with Daguerrotypes and Ferrotypes aka Tintypes. The image will be mirrored on a daguerreotype and tintype. An ambrotype (except a ruby ambrotype-- on colored glass) can usually be displayed both true or mirrored and I have seen them both ways in undisturbed period cases. civilwarimages Posted May 18, 2018 Share #12 Posted May 18, 2018 Looks like a tintype to me because of the depth within the case.
