Keith Posted April 26, 2018 Share #1 Posted April 26, 2018 Can anyone tell me the model of this aircraft? Can anyone narrow it down by the number on the side? (?ON 84) Thanks.
General Colt Posted April 26, 2018 Share #2 Posted April 26, 2018 Looks like a B-24 Liberator.

Plankowner Posted April 26, 2018 Share #4 Posted April 26, 2018 I think it is a B-24 also. Check out the front landing gear wheel and doors on this B-24.
Keith Posted April 26, 2018 Author Share #5 Posted April 26, 2018 I think you guys are right, a B24. I am now trying to nail down the "84". If this is a training aircraft would it have "Squadron 84" on the side? I am at a loss for those two letters, "ON" preceding the number?
Keith Posted April 26, 2018 Author Share #6 Posted April 26, 2018 More info. I believe I have narrowed this aircraft down to the 4th AAF which patroled the West Coast. I believe they were also involved in training air crews. THanks.
phantomfixer Posted April 30, 2018 Share #7 Posted April 30, 2018 84 is the what they referred to as the buzz number...maybe unofficially....large enough on the plane as to be seen from the ground if the pilot was caught buzzing a farmers house, town base etc... ragpick Posted April 30, 2018 Share #8 Posted April 30, 2018 The advanced 4 engine training base at Liberal, Kansas used the fuselage marking ON as seen in the photo. They operated with the B-24.
Keith Posted May 1, 2018 Author Share #9 Posted May 1, 2018 The advanced 4 engine training base at Liberal, Kansas used the fuselage marking ON as seen in the photo. They operated with the B-24.that is very helpful and I will pursue that further. With this photo came another of a crew who had the 4th AAF patch on their uniforms. The crew is Id' on the back. Probably post training. Thanks for the help.
MattS Posted May 1, 2018 Share #10 Posted May 1, 2018 This site has a photo of an "ON" marked B-24 at the top of the page: http://www.fuselagecodes.com/id71.html
MECHINF-A15 Posted May 2, 2018 Share #11 Posted May 2, 2018 MattS, Thank you very for posting this link. My late father was a Pilot Cadet at Waco Air Field (Waco, Texas) when the war ended. This helps a lot in my research on him. All the best, Mike
