Luke Field, Territory of Hawaii,Thursday, October 30th 1930. Not known by many, but Ford Island in the middle of Pearl Harbor was once home to the Army Air Corps. When nearby Hickam Field opened, Luke Field was handed over to the navy in 1939. This freed up the name Luke, and it was used for a new base in WW2, the present day Luke AFB, Arizona.

LB-5's and 0-19's are seen on the field.

That's great picture of Luke Field and the north end of Ford Island, Steindaddie. Link here for a present day view of the ramp where those aircraft were parked and the remaining buildings.

Here is the cover of a rather elaborate semimonthly "news magazine" produced by 5th Composite Group in the mid-1930s. Each unit and activity at Luke had its own section. The flying squadrons comprising 5th Composite Group in March 1934 were 23rd and 72nd Bombardment Squadrons and 4th and 50th Observation Squadrons (from USMF member Kiaiokalewa's collection).

Wailuna, thanks for the link. I've taken a few trips to Ford Island and poked around. For years it was like a time capsule but that has changed a bit, as you well know. Nice News magazine too - Gotta love the emblem of the 5th ! While on the subject of Luke field, here's some odds & ends.

Most of these photos were taken by this unit seen and the collection came from the man seated far right. I have his name somewheres......

And while on the Hawaiian topic - here's the aerial armada (and boats too) that welcomed President Roosevelt aboard the USS Houston to Hawaii in 1934
