P.S. Could someone please explain to me the differences between the infantry rifles--flintlock vs. bolt action? Is it related to when they were made---or something else? Thanks, Al.

Nice uniform, but wants is that unit crest ?, its not the 305th infantry.

Hi,

Thanks!!

The unit crest is the University of North Carolina ROTC Department.

The uniform came of Raleigh, NC. I bet the man was an ROTC instructor at the college...It makes since that it was a Raleigh ROTC instructor since it came from Raleigh.

Thanks, i guess he was on detached service and had the right to still wear his divisonal patch and kept for wear those crossed rifles branch pins, something i would think most officers would do.

O.K., I think that I might have figured it out. In the early 1900's there was an effort to have the infantry insignia modernized to show the rifles currently being used. It looks like some may have been issued, like the ones I posted earlier (post #101). But then, in 1924, a final decision was made to keep the original flintlock design. Soooooo.....are the crossed rifles that I posted maybe a short lived effort to have the 1903 Springfield used for the insignia? Mine looks to be almost a copper color metal with black paint applied. Thanks for any input, Al Hirschler in Dallas.

This topic was locked for a long time for some reason, a little over 9 years, couldn't see why, unless it got out of hand with personal attacks and fights and those replies were removed but was still locked LOL?

So we're glad it got unlocked to add more of these interesting insignias.

Like this one.

One Lieutenant Colonel Philip Johnson a battalion commander in the 389th Infantry 98th Infantry Division, wearing Regimentally numbered Crossed Rifles. Can't find anyhing else on him.

There is a separate thread on WWII officer’s airborne brass, but I thought I might add these to the pinned thread.
