hirsca Posted August 7, 2011 #84 Posted August 7, 2011 Picked this up today. Any info on it is much appreciated. Thanks, Al Hirschler in Dallas. P.S. Could someone please explain to me the differences between the infantry rifles--flintlock vs. bolt action? Is it related to when they were made---or something else? Thanks, Al.
cavcon Posted August 14, 2011 #85 Posted August 14, 2011 WOW! Some great pieces there. Love the 1st RCN one, as well as several others!!!
Ricardo Posted August 14, 2011 #86 Posted August 14, 2011 Nice uniform, but wants is that unit crest ?, its not the 305th infantry. Hi, Thanks!! The unit crest is the University of North Carolina ROTC Department. The uniform came of Raleigh, NC. I bet the man was an ROTC instructor at the college...It makes since that it was a Raleigh ROTC instructor since it came from Raleigh. More informations in: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/ind...784&hl=77th Best regards, Ricardo.

Thanks, i guess he was on detached service and had the right to still wear his divisonal patch and kept for wear those crossed rifles branch pins, something i would think most officers would do.
hirsca Posted August 16, 2011 #88 Posted August 16, 2011 P.S. Could someone please explain to me the differences between the infantry rifles--flintlock vs. bolt action? Is it related to when they were made---or something else? Thanks, Al. O.K., I think that I might have figured it out. In the early 1900's there was an effort to have the infantry insignia modernized to show the rifles currently being used. It looks like some may have been issued, like the ones I posted earlier (post #101). But then, in 1924, a final decision was made to keep the original flintlock design. Soooooo.....are the crossed rifles that I posted maybe a short lived effort to have the 1903 Springfield used for the insignia? Mine looks to be almost a copper color metal with black paint applied. Thanks for any input, Al Hirschler in Dallas.

tredhed2 Posted April 6, 2022 #94 Posted April 6, 2022 711th ROB (first battalion in MRS) worn until Nov 42 when MRS units transferred from CoE to TC.
patches Posted April 8, 2022 #95 Posted April 8, 2022 This topic was locked for a long time for some reason, a little over 9 years, couldn't see why, unless it got out of hand with personal attacks and fights and those replies were removed but was still locked LOL? So we're glad it got unlocked to add more of these interesting insignias. Like this one. One Lieutenant Colonel Philip Johnson a battalion commander in the 389th Infantry 98th Infantry Division, wearing Regimentally numbered Crossed Rifles. Can't find anyhing else on him.
Austin_Militaria Posted January 18, 2023 #96 Posted January 18, 2023 111th Medical BN, 36th Infantry. Snowflake backing.
Austin_Militaria Posted January 19, 2023 #97 Posted January 19, 2023 My mistake, it is the 111th Medical Regiment. The portrait is of Colonel JOHN J. O'REILLY Commander of the 111th. Pretty sure he is wearing similar collar devices. https://www.texasmilitaryforcesmuseum.org/1940/111med.htm
tredhed2 Posted March 25, 2023 #98 Posted March 25, 2023 This came w/ a #d armor triangle and an unnumbered pickle tank insignia just like this one. #s added after "brass" recd by officer.

Allan H. Posted April 25, 2024 #100 Posted April 25, 2024 There is a separate thread on WWII officer’s airborne brass, but I thought I might add these to the pinned thread. Allan
