Fred J. O'Byrnes was born May 7, 1896 in Chicago, Illinois. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in March of 1917. By May of that same year, he was shipped out to the Dominican Republic as a part of the 44th Co. On August 23,1919 he received a letter of commendation from Commandant Barnett for "coolness and good judgment" against a group of bandits at Mata de la Palma.post-7989-0-01483000-1521841234.jpgpost-7989-0-88325700-1521841263_thumb.jpg

That's a great grouping you picked up, and a good reminder that the Marine Corps was fighting in places other than France at that time. Thanks for sharing!

Sgt. O'Byrnes was discharged and reenlisted in 1921. He continued his service in the Dominican Republic until one day he accidentally shot himself in the abdomen with a .45 pistol. He was medically discharged less than a year later in 1924. He continued service with the VFW and DAV.post-7989-0-45841600-1521850185_thumb.jpgpost-7989-0-10464000-1521850202_thumb.jpgpost-7989-0-07970100-1521850219.jpg

I agree. Lots of action going on around the world besides France. Not to take away from our boys in the AEF.

Thank you guys for taking the time to read this post. I'll try to post more pictures tomorrow of the things given to him when he came home from WW1.

Like everyone else has said, great grouping and can't wait to see more pictures. I am just starting out looking for things like this and really am appreciative of everyone being so helpful.
