Is this a proper ww2 HS-38 Headset, or a postwar variation?

Is the chamois cover on the ear set correct?

No. That's for aircraft use. You need the R14 headset for a tanker helmet.

Here is a Link that discusses the head sets. It seems to say this is proper. It says that the Army AC and the NAvy switched in 1943 to low-impedance HS-33 headset with the ANB-H-1 rec. . I am confused...

It's good that you're doing your own research. You won't find a pair of ANB-H-1's in any of my tanker helmets though. I looked at the threads you referenced and didn't see any conclusive evidence that they used them in tanker helmets.

How much would you say an R14 costs? Gonna try and look into one.
