mwesson030 Posted March 18, 2018 Share #1 Posted March 18, 2018 Just found this helmet for sale at an online auction and I was wondering if you guys think the paint is period or if it was done afterwards? Sorry about the lack of detailed of photos.

mohawkALSE Posted March 18, 2018 Share #4 Posted March 18, 2018 Looks to me like a 1969 contract SPH-4. Has the leather tabs on the ear cup retention assembly where the chin and oxygen mask snaps are, and the first style single screw hinge boom as used on the AFH-1 helmets and the 69 contract SPH-4. Later on the 71 contract helmets they went to the newer style boom with a ball joint. That boom stayed current on all the SPH-4 and 4B helmets. HGU-56/P helmet came out with a new style boom when they came in to service. Id say the artwork was done when they were leaving country or after. hink441 Posted March 18, 2018 Share #5 Posted March 18, 2018 Nice looking helmet, it is sad the "Hillclimers" on the back is not spelled correctly. Chris
