jmpmstr Posted March 17, 2018 Share #1 Posted March 17, 2018 Ive always been intrigued by NASA medals, but havent liked the quality of the newer strikes. Was lucky to find several last week with nice detail and earlier strikes. I like the detail and the engraved reverses vice the newer impressed reverses. My preference is always older versus newer strikes. Any thoughts on timeframe for these? Im leaning toward 80s, maybe late 70s? Id suppose when the engraved reverse ceased, if anyone with more expertise had any thoughts.
LuftStalg1 Posted March 17, 2018 Share #2 Posted March 17, 2018 I am with you Sal, I can not stand the new high polished medals. It makes me think of the fancy MC dress/parade medals. Yuck! I framed all my NASA medals together years ago but can tell you the OL and ESA are a little newer then the DSC and ES. The engraving on the back switched to that cast in/stamped look type engraving before they started making the medals with the high polished look. I would guess it was about mid 2000's when I started seeing those, my last order of NASA medals. Nice find!
jmpmstr Posted March 18, 2018 Author Share #3 Posted March 18, 2018 Thank you. I was revisiting your posts of your framed display, fantastic. I’d prefer cased sets of the older ones but I’ll start here as long as they’re the older good quality ones. I find the NASA add some other civilian type medals of better quality than many of our military awards. Either way with the advent of the civilian rocket program these are poignant reminders of our space service era.

LuftStalg1 Posted March 23, 2018 Share #5 Posted March 23, 2018 Can we get a link to your nasa display luftstalg1 Sorry for the delay, just found your request Chris! What a pain in the butt to find it again. I have had a couple of PC crashes and lost my portable HD. Here is a link I found to some of my process on the NASA set. It is part of another thread and around post #108 is the first picture of my NASA set. Now I need to start looking for the 4 new medals as I see Ed posted photos of one already awarded. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/96985-astronauts-medal-display/page-5 Mark

jmpmstr Posted April 8, 2018 Author Share #8 Posted April 8, 2018 Thanks I do like the finish and overall detail of it. It came in a trade with a duplicate of one I’ve posted in the sale thread. Good trades are always better IMO
manayunkman Posted April 8, 2018 Share #9 Posted April 8, 2018 New medals look like gold chocolate coins but coins taste good. When were the NASA medals first issued and are there earlier strikes?
Allan H. Posted April 8, 2018 Share #10 Posted April 8, 2018 New medals look like gold chocolate coins but coins taste good. When were the NASA medals first issued and are there earlier strikes? I think that you are looking at earlier strikes here. Allan
jmpmstr Posted April 8, 2018 Author Share #11 Posted April 8, 2018 NASA first awarded their DSM in 1959. These listed are earlier strikes. The detail and matte finish are indicators. The more current, late 90s through now, have that polished finish that looks so much like carnival toys. The DPSM was first awarded in 1966. jmpmstr Posted September 20, 2020 Author Share #14 Posted September 20, 2020 Another new addition that I’ve broken my rule regarding older strikes vice newer but it’ll do for now. NASA Exceptional Technology Achievement Medal likely from the 70s. In spite of the finish I like it well enough. Not here yet but coming in the mail
LuftStalg1 Posted September 24, 2020 Share #15 Posted September 24, 2020 You didn't break your rule, this one has ONLY existed a couple years and in the NEW shiny version. I am the same way, I prefer the satin look to the chrome look. Still looking for the most recent ones to be added by NASA. So far I have only seen line drawling's of them. mikie Posted September 24, 2020 Share #16 Posted September 24, 2020 Nice medals. And I agree, the shiny ones look kind of cheap. In case you are not aware of it, check out collectspace.com. Its kind of an USMF but for space. Mikie
jmpmstr Posted September 25, 2020 Author Share #17 Posted September 25, 2020 Another on the way. I’m waiting for a couple others to end from same seller but this one is won so I’ve used the auction pictures from Bill

Dave Posted October 4, 2020 Share #19 Posted October 4, 2020 Anyone on here get the named NASA DSM that closed on eBay? I never saw it as it wasn't posted in the militaria section...I don't collect NASA, but I would have paid far more for it than the final price he got... Link to the auction with some really good close-up photos: https://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-NAMED-NASA-MEDAL-ADMIN-JAMES-M-BEGGS-PERSONAL-DSM-JUNE-2-1989-/333661146594
jmpmstr Posted October 4, 2020 Author Share #20 Posted October 4, 2020 I didn’t see it either else I’d have been in there as well. I’ve been on a NASA kick lately so it would have been a coup
