tigerfan Posted March 11, 2018 Share #1 Posted March 11, 2018 This interesting bowie style knife measures 16-1/4" in overall length with the blade measuring 11". On either side of the unusual "bird beak" pommel is a small NY mark. I don't see any markings on the blade. Any help with what this is, is appreciated. sundance Posted March 11, 2018 Share #2 Posted March 11, 2018 No clue about it but that's one big neat knife.
268th C.A. Posted March 11, 2018 Share #3 Posted March 11, 2018 I'd say most likely Civil War era. Nice knife, Nice surviving sheath too....
skypilot6670 Posted March 11, 2018 Share #4 Posted March 11, 2018 R.H.Alexander Sheffield made Bowie used the same hallmark on some of his civil war Bowie’s. Certainly deserves some research as this could be a very nice war dated knife. Good hunting. Mike
doyler Posted March 11, 2018 Share #5 Posted March 11, 2018 I'm thinking the knife is a generic English made export which is common to see a lot of English knives during the period and after the Civil War. A mark used by the maker or exporter or maybe by the importer and reseller?...all just speculation on my end. Heres a Sheffield Marked knife with NY and shield on the blade I currently own. doyler Posted March 11, 2018 Share #6 Posted March 11, 2018 Marks are faint but appears to be an Alexander Sheffield
doyler Posted March 11, 2018 Share #7 Posted March 11, 2018 I'm sure someone at the Baltimore show will have a good handle on the area/vintage of the knife
