USS Intrepid Ships Detachment Marine with Purple Heart

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, my most recent purchase is an identified uniform to a Marine who served on board the USS Intrepid and was wounded in action.

I plan on getting his records to get more details on how he was wounded and will post here when I find out.

As it stands, Im quite happy with the ribbon rack and uniform. Thanks for looking

Congrats on a great piece! Looks to be in great shape and it appears that he had an impressive tour at sea from the ribbon rack. I've always been partial to the seagoing marines as my grandfather served as one on the aircraft carrier Belleau Wood. I was thrilled to pick up a set of alphas to a marine on the Bunker Hill for my own collection a couple years back. I'm excited to read about the history when you post it!

Thank you for the comments gentlemen. CPerkins, It is in excellent shape and Im always happy to find any identified uniforms. Ive never come across a Ships Detachment uniform with a PH before and figured they cant be too common.

Patches, I dont know what action he was wounded in but his casualty card lists the date of wound as 16 Apr 45.

There would be plenty of PH recipients among Ships Detachments for sure, the Kamikaze attacks late war for one, then earlier in 1942 off Guadalcanal by detachments board all those Cruisers that either went under or where heavily damaged, not to mention those on Flat Tops during Coral Sea and Midway ETC .

In example here are Carrier losses in WWII, this doesn't list the damaged one's, say like Benjamin Franklin (Carriers of course sunk post war as we see will be discounted).

Great info guys, thanks.

I didnt mean to imply that ships detachment Marines being wounded was rare. I meant that theyre uncommon for me to come across and have an opportunity to acquire. Of all my WW2 marine uniforms I only have one other identified PH recipient and he was an infantryman. This is the first Ive personally seen for sale in my time collecting.

We got ya, that finding named/provenance coats, Greens and or Blues, from Ships Detachment Marines with PH's is the rare uncommon thing :D .

I believe most of the marines' battle stations on a carrier were 40mm or 20mm AA guns, so pretty exposed around the flight deck when a Kamikaze came in.

BTW Jonathan Winters was a carrier Marine in 1945, Bon Homme Richard CV-31.
