Pip Posted February 8, 2018 Share #1 Posted February 8, 2018 Is this a civil war era soldier ?
dunmore1774 Posted February 8, 2018 Share #2 Posted February 8, 2018 It is a CW era soldier, but it seems pretty suspicious... I think I've seen that image before. Is it possibly one of those copies on a tinplate?
tarbridge Posted February 8, 2018 Share #3 Posted February 8, 2018 Nice image...looks Civil War...maybe a Zouave. Edit: speaking about the soldier.

skypilot6670 Posted February 8, 2018 Share #9 Posted February 8, 2018 Union Pvt. Francis E. Brownell shot the proprietor of the Marshal house in Alexandria Virginia after that man shot Elmer Ellsworth for pulling down a confederate flag. Ellsworth a friend of Lincoln was the first union officer killed in the war. This is a widely published and known image.

Keith Posted February 9, 2018 Share #13 Posted February 9, 2018 When you get it put a magnet on it. An original ferrotype/tintype will be magnetic. Copies are non-magnetic.
Pip Posted February 9, 2018 Author Share #14 Posted February 9, 2018 Now I just have to find a magnet haha.

Capt.Confederacy Posted February 9, 2018 Share #20 Posted February 9, 2018 Definitely get a refund. I've seen a lot of these fake tintypes showing up at flea markets and antique stores in the last few months, but they usually are not in color and don't have a CW period frame/holder. Pip Posted February 9, 2018 Author Share #21 Posted February 9, 2018 It was very sneaky for sure. He said sent it back and he will refund.
Capt.Confederacy Posted February 9, 2018 Share #22 Posted February 9, 2018 That's good news that you'll get your money back. Here's a link that shows a similar fake tintype with the very same soldier featured on it. http://modoc1873.stores.yahoo.net/noname18.html
skypilot6670 Posted February 9, 2018 Share #23 Posted February 9, 2018 If you go to EBays Main Page (search all catagories) and enter Custer tintype a tin of him comes up for $12.99 . Open this sale , click on, see other items and you will find tintypes of everything from brothels to this image of Francis Brownel. To the sellers credit he list his tins as reproductions. scottiques Posted February 12, 2018 Share #24 Posted February 12, 2018 Lots of FAKE tintypes out there now. They are made on iron plates, so they pass the magnet test. Biggest indicator is the condition of back and the front. Colors also raise a red flag. Most that I have seen lately have been published images with numerous weapons. Many are sold for what they are ($10 copy images), but some folks are putting them in a case and trying to get slick. This particular image was made as a cdv, so any tintype version is bogus. By the way, if you'd like an original cdv of Brownell (same pose) contact me as I have one for sale! Scott
skypilot6670 Posted February 13, 2018 Share #25 Posted February 13, 2018 Never noticed it before , he has a strip of black fabric tied on his arm. Probably morning his dead commander.
