link Posted February 2, 2018 Share #1 Posted February 2, 2018 I have a brass cleaning rod which is slightly bigger than a 45 rod. It is ~.233" dia vs .218" of the 45 rod and will not fit through the holes in a M1912 rod holder. The length is ~8-7/8" or ~3/16" longer than the 45. As you can see in the pic the slot is slightly larger and it does have the threaded end a 45 cleaning bush will screw into (8-32?) What might this be for? kwill Posted February 3, 2018 Share #2 Posted February 3, 2018 I suspect the bottom rod may be a reproduction of the top one.
link Posted February 3, 2018 Author Share #3 Posted February 3, 2018 That's interesting thought. Seems like an expensive reproduction.
thorin6 Posted February 3, 2018 Share #4 Posted February 3, 2018 I've seen the bottom type sold for $7.95 at some surplus places in the past few years. Not really reproductions, just current productions that sometimes get passed as original. The way I identify them is by the loop at the top. It isn't round, but more of an egg shape, and the beginning bend is more gradual, not as sharp as an original. I believe they are made in China. link Posted February 4, 2018 Author Share #5 Posted February 4, 2018 You're right about the shape as that is what first got my attention. So it is for cleaning 45s? Or would the slightly larger diameter still work on the 9mm's? What are they good for? Thanks!
link Posted June 2, 2018 Author Share #6 Posted June 2, 2018 As a side note to this original question, I've noticed that my brass cleaning rods have some slight length differences. When compared to steel 5564102 M.F.I.- DAI and J.A.M. 5564102 rods some brass appear about 1/16 to 3/32" longer. One brass rod is actually slightly shorter. All brass rods fit in the 1912 kit appearing to have correct diameter rod and loop is nicely round and closed. One other anomaly is the slot in the steel rods is an 1/8"-1/4" further from the end than any brass rods. Also the newer J.A.M. 5564102 rod slot appears slightly longer than the older rods. With all that said, I'm thinking that from 1912 to 1940'ish the brass rod manufacturing capabilities and tolerances may have changed and this is not unusual. Can anyone expound on this? Grant S. Posted June 8, 2018 Share #8 Posted June 8, 2018 Just a guess but could be British .455. Looks pretty much the same as the US one.
