lost-and-found-history Posted January 27, 2018 Share #1 Posted January 27, 2018 I often tell young collectors, do your homework and learn as much as you can! This is an example on how one person's lack of knowledge can be another's gain. This M1881 infantry Shako plate was listed on eBay as a "WW2 Westpoint hat badge," with a BIN of $30.00! Its not the prettiest example out there, but its got great patina and character!
KurtA Posted January 28, 2018 Share #2 Posted January 28, 2018 Just for the sake of accuracy this is actually an M1881 Helmet, not Shako, plate. A shako is a very different type of headgear. You will find these plates unofficially used on other types of headgear other than the M1881 US Army Enlisted man Dress Helmet, as the design is very popular to this day (especially with marching bands). The newer made plates are usually screw back, rather than having the soldered affixing wire of the originals.
