Unknown Torpedo Squadron patch? ID: 497th FIS

Hi all, I am definitely not well versed in Naval Patches from WWII (if this isn't a naval patch, my apologies).

 

I found this guy in a lot of other original patches from WWII and wanted some direction as to which outfit it belonged too. I have found several Torpedo units with the upside down horseshoe so I would imagine the old adage about your "luck being poured" out rang true with Torpedo Squadrons swooping in to sink some enemy ships.

 

The odd mark near the bottom is from being burned, the heat bled through to the other side as well.

Hmm, you could be right, the missiles lack the girth of a torpedo for sure.

It is a US Air Force patch from the 497th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. Another member posted a similar patch about a week ago http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/282526-497th-fis/
