Order of the dragon medal boxed and numbered

Recommended Posts

Interesting piece.I had never heard of this Order,so I did some research and found this great site:

http://chinamarine.org/HeadgearUniformsandEquipage.aspx

If you scroll about 3/4's of the way down you will see the medals.

The website states that what you have is the Imperial Order of the Dragon. As the Military Order of the Dragon medal was for officers, this medal was given to enlisted men.

Great find!

High Flight

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth

And danced the skies on laughter-silver wings;

Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth

Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung

High in the sunlit silence. Hovering there

I've chased the shouting wind along and flung

My eager craft through footless halls of air.

Up, up the long delirious, burning blue

I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace,

where never lark, or even eagle flew;

and while, with silent, lifting mind I've trod

The high untrespassed sanctity of space,

Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Imperial Order of the Dragon #674 was John J. Zalner. Unfortunately, Zalner doesn't appear in the issue records for the China Relief medals, so he may have never gotten his federal award. The 1900 Census does list him as a Landsman aboard USS Buffalo.
