huntssurplus Posted December 30, 2017 Share #1 Posted December 30, 2017 Hello, I decided to buy an HBT I found on eBay. I believe it to be a late war 3rd pattern HBT because of the plastic buttons, and I was wondering if it was WW2 era and if it was original. I was also wondering if i bought it for a good price. Thanks!Hunt https://www.ebay.com/itm/WWII-U-S-ARMY-HERRINGBONE-TWILL-JACKET-SPECIAL-Small-Very-Nice/312019013542?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2750.l2649
FT.Monmouth1943 Posted December 30, 2017 Share #2 Posted December 30, 2017 Post WWII. Not sure if the date is legible, but it's probably dated 1947.
patches Posted December 30, 2017 Share #3 Posted December 30, 2017 M1947 HBT shirt, worn from the late 40s-late 50s. GI as opposed to an Army-Navy store type, buttons seen can be plastic as yours is, Black or OD tack buttons of the two types, Dished with laurel leaf and or the more common, burst of glory. patches Posted December 30, 2017 Share #5 Posted December 30, 2017 Thanks for the help, so most likely Korean War, another question, when were these replaced? Thanks Hunt Replaced as in superseded, that would be really by the mid 1950s by the 1st pattern OG 107 Cotton Sateen fatiques, this as the standard issue fatigues for basic trainees. BUT these M1947 and even the earlier M1943 shirts and even in some cases though rare, the M1941 HBT shirt, still were worn by all those who had them well into the mid 50s. Like here we see two examples of a M1943 HBT fatique shirt worn well into the 50s, with the M1943 shirt, they just didn't wear the M1943 Cargo pocket pants anymore, just the M1947 HBT pants, which were the same design as the 1st pattern cotton sateen pants. patches Posted December 30, 2017 Share #6 Posted December 30, 2017 And when these older M1943 shirts were worn in the 50s, not in Korea during the war, but in Garrison, that Gas Flap was in the overwhelming majority of cases, removed, as it was considered unnecessary and lent the shirt to a less streamlined appearance, and interfered with the wearing of branch scarfs and if no scarf was worn, then the obscuring of view of the White T-Shirt. Thanks for the info! I was looking for more of a WW2 era HBT as I wanted to start a Pacific Army display but, I also collect Korean War era items so this should fit into my collection. I'm curious though about how much one of these are worth. And how much is the previous WW2 era HBT's are worth? Thanks again for the help patches! patches Posted December 30, 2017 Share #16 Posted December 30, 2017 The one bitch about the modified M1943s is that if they had metal tack buttons they could be removed from the inside that hclosed the gas flaps as we see, sewn buttons no problem, they just removed the sewn buttons. iron bender Posted December 30, 2017 Share #17 Posted December 30, 2017 I've owned two WW2 hbt shirts that were converted to Ike style jackets in the 50's. One 3rd ID the other 2nd ID. Both had cig pockets added to the left sleeve. Damn I wish I still had them. Patches, those two examples are incredible. Love the name tapes! I actually bid on what i now believe to be a modified m43 as the pockets were small like these but it had the metal 13 star buttons. I didn't win as it went for about $35 + $8 shipping at least to my area, it had patches at some point in its life but they had all been removed. I didn't think it was quite worth it especially since I didn't really have a lot of knowledge on it. I've owned two WW2 hbt shirts that were converted to Ike style jackets in the 50's.
