Salvage Sailor

Aloha Everyone,

Help a sailor out if you can, I've been through my Asmic catalogs and have yet to positively ID these DUI's. All are WWII or earlier screw backs.

  1. The first one I know is Ohio National Guard, but which unit? I'm thinking 37th Division MP's due to the colors (and it came with a 112th Med which was also attached to the 37th ID in WWII)
  2. Dragon with green stripe. Brigade? National Guard?
  3. Rainbow with a cactus. I used to have the ID but have misplaced it.
  4. This one I believe is also an Ohio unit (came with the same group) 716th MP WWII era? It's a N.S. Meyer but in silver, not gold. Was silver the color in WWII?
  5. Motto is messed up, Infantry unit?

Thanks in advance insignia detectives.....

Last pin is 163 MP "Nihil Timemus"

Thanks for that one, missed it in my catalog. The only difference is it's a screw back with black lettering, not red lettering. Can't find anything on their lineage online to date this one.

Edit: Found a photo online, they were in the Philippines http://www.ww2online.org/image/163rd-mp-company-troops-search-japanese-prisoners-war-near-dagupan-philippines-1945

4th pin 716th Miltary police

Right, my question on this one is, it's a N.S. Meyer screw back but in silver, not gold. Was silver the color in WWII?

If this is the 716th MP, they were stateside in WWII http://nebula.wsimg.com/026bd857c524655c0495e0c9808df64a?AccessKeyId=D3919051298B2C272AD8&disposition=0&alloworigin=1

HISTORY OF THE 716TH MILITARY POLICE BATTALION
OUR MOTTO: LEX ET ORDO – LAW AND ORDER
The 716th Military Police Battalion was activated in accordance with General Orders No. 2, Headquarters, Second Corps Area; Fort Wadsworth, New York dated 15 January 1942, and actually came into being on 22 January 1942, when the first troops arrived. The 716th Military Police Battalion was one of the first military police battalions activated in the Army of the United States.
In February, the battalion moved to the Jersey City Armory with the mission of guarding the railroad yards and installations containing tremendous stockpiles of war materials. Some of the duties performed by the battalion during this period and for the next four years were: Security at Newark Airport, guarding troop transports and Fort Jay, Governors Island, New York. The battalion provided honor guards for visiting dignitaries, escorted General Officer Prisoners of War to places of confinement and supervised prisoner of war movements to all parts of the United States.
In the summer of 1946, the battalion moved from Fort Wadsworth to Fort Dix on a permanent change of station. Elements of the battalion were dispatched to various Army posts in Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey. Their mission continued to be general military police duties including duty at post stockades and burial detail duties. While serving at Fort Dix, our platoon was detailed as Honor Guard for President Truman and Governor Dewey at the dedication of the United Nations building in New York City.

Btw, these came from a junk drawer group I got about 10 years ago and I'm thinking this was a soldier from Ohio who served in several WWII MP units. It also had the 112th Med and some other 37th ID units (Ohio NG)

Found a nice Ohio NG DUI topic on the forum which includes the 37th Division MP (Meyer) and also the 148th IR and 112th Med which came with this grouping.

Impressive WWII era Ohio National Guard DUI collection http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/218713-impressive-wwii-era-ohio-national-guard-dui-collection/

148th Infantry Regiment (Dondero 148A) and 112th Medical Battalion (Meyer) shown below which came with the others. All were WWII units of the 37th Infantry Division

The middle pin with the cactus and rainbow reminds me of the saguaro cactus in Arizona so maybe for an Arizona college.

Any other leads on the Rainbow with the Cactus? Still no joy

The rainbow usually indicates 42nd 'Rainbow" Division. Red/White usually indicates Engineers. 142nd Engineer Combat Bn was assigned to 42nd ID. Could that be it?

Aloha Gil,

Just went through the two Asmic Engineer catalogs again but found no matches nor anything even close. I also went through the three Artillery catalogs again and although there are some rainbows, nothing with a cactus.

It may be a State unit, perhaps Southwestern, or even a College unit. The search continues.....

Excellent Brent,

I'd been searching through Arizona, Utah and Nevada NG & ROTC. California was next.

Thanks for the positive ID

Another PTO support unit, this one with the 40th ID. Makes sense that this potential MP would have it as a memento as they were in the same Corps with the 37th ID and both Divisions were at New Guinea, Manaus and Leyte Gulf at the same time.

Reorganized and Federally recognized 12 May 1936 in the California National Guard at Sacramento as Company A, 115th Quartermaster Regiment, an element of the 40th Division
