"I have only two men out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." (Message sent by 1st Lt. Clifton B. Cates. USMC, 96th Co., Soissons, 19 July 1918 - later 19th Commandant of the Marine Corps 1948-1952)

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all.

One hundred years ago my grandfather was in France, and not on holiday. Here's a Christmas card he sent home from the front. He was in the famed 78th "Lightning" Division. He entered the military on September 27, 1917, when he was 25 years old.

Battery F 309 Field Artillery Sep 17, 1917-Jul 1, 1918; Supply Company, 309 Field Artillery July 10, 1918 - May 1, 1919.

I have been meaning to post this image of his helmet which has the division insignia painted on it. I also have his Victory Medal.

His son and namesake was a B-17 waist gunner during WWII who completed 51 missions, including two crash landings. On one, he was in hand-to-hand knife combat, killing a German soldier to save his own life. His last mission was over Linz, Austria where he was severely injured, but after a year in the hospital survived.
