Recommendations on 1/32 F4U Corsair

I built a 1/48 (I believe it was a Revell) F4U corsair way back when I was in high school. I've wanted to build a larger version for some time and thought I'd buy it for myself for Christmas this year. I want to hang it up, so I would like to build it with the landing gear up. The 1/48 one I built did not have that option and could only be built with the landing gear down. I've been eyieng the Revell 1/32 version, but am unsure if it can be built 'flying'. Has anyone had any experience with this model, or can anyone recommend one that can be built with the landing gear up?

thanks

-Eric

If I am correct, this model has been out for over 30 years and is a really good kit. It should have folding wings AND the option to display it with the gear retracted. I built two of these kits as a kid and I loved them. The wings can be tricky, but you should be able to glue them in place if you don't want them to fold.

There are at least 3 different 1/32 scale Corsair kits available, the old Revell kit, then Trumpeter and Tamiya. If you are going to hang it up all the interior details offered in the Trumpeter and Tamiya kits would probably be expensive overkill. I built what was supposed to be the Royal Navy version Revell kit when I was a kid.

Looks like that version does not come with the option based on the instructions......, however, usually you can get the doors to fit on most models to just do a 'gear' up yourself. I've done many 1/48th scale monogram/revell kits this way. It's not always perfect and may require a little surgery to the part, but you can get it to work.

Full disclosure, it's been a VERY long time since I've built a model, and those were mostly ships. I did just pick up one of these though and have a paint question ... The box lists only a half dozen colors but the instructions list about 20. Before investing in a bunch of colors I'm wondering if the Revelle paints are a good quality or if i should choose another maker (assuming conversion charts exist). Thanks

Conversion charts are easy to find on the internet. The best type of paint will also depend if you use brush or airbrush. There are plenty of building reports on the internet you can have a look at to see what techniques are used for shading etc.

I have had no issues really with using any of the Testors Model Masters (acrylic or enamel paints). Some people like the Tamiya acrylics, and then there are all other brands too like humbrol and AK interactiv. Like EarlyMB said, definitely want to determine if you are airbrushing or not before buying paints, since some brands lend themselves better to one than the other.

As far as the colors, I would look up a Corsair build, and then go with some of their recommendations. I have found sometimes the instructions aren't always as good in recommendations, esp in the paint colors. Sometimes you also pick up a few pointers on construction of the kit too. A quick google search will turn up plenty of sites to look at.
