Pfc Merton R Johnston wounded on Tarawa Nov 20, He company came up on Red beach one on the First Wave, Company M,There capt was George Wentzel, of M company He was standing atop of the seawall helmet less with pipe in hand giving orders to his men to get up from the seawall and move in,The more he yell the more he drew enemy fire,His men told him to get down,He even yelled more at them .An finally he took a round in the neck, And died right there at the wall.This is where Merton took a round in the neck, And another blast shot sharp metal in to his wrist and shoulder, chest.This was all at the seawall. He was evacuated to the USS Solace.
