chcole1 Posted November 14, 2017 Share #1 Posted November 14, 2017 I picked these up separately the other day. I'd like to have a correct bayonet and scabbard to go with a 1943 M-1 Garand I recently purchased from the CMP. I don't really collect edged weapons, so my knowledge is very limited. Because of the fuller or "blood groove" going all the way to the point, it's my guess that this is a 1905 E1, an original 1905 bayonet that was cut down during the War from 16" to 10". I know UC stands for Utica Cutlery, but I'm curious what the "392" on the other side of the blade might mean? It seems like it was done at a later time, but that's just a guess. I'd also like to determine if the scabbard is the right one for this bayonet. To me, it seems to be a M3 scabbard that was shortened to be a M7. It's missing the angled cuts at the top of the body where it attaches to the throat and the way the throat is crimped to hold the body in place. Let me know if I have my details right and if I'm missing something. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Chris

m1ashooter Posted November 14, 2017 Share #3 Posted November 14, 2017 This will help you in gaining knowledge of a lot of stuff. Bayonet is USGI. Scabbard looks good to me. http://www.usmilitaryknives.com/bayonet_points.htm
chcole1 Posted November 14, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted November 14, 2017 Thank you. Can you tell me if the number on side with the Ordinance Wheel is considered a serial number?
tankerman Posted November 14, 2017 Share #5 Posted November 14, 2017 these were NOT serial numbered.
sactroop Posted November 14, 2017 Share #6 Posted November 14, 2017 Maybe a rack number used by the armory storing the bayonets. Although that's pretty serious stamping it on when usually they're just painted.
atb Posted November 14, 2017 Share #7 Posted November 14, 2017 Ordnance vs. Ordinance. Two very different things.

MattS Posted November 16, 2017 Share #9 Posted November 16, 2017 I agree with m1ashooter above, reading Gary's blog posts is very informative (as are his books). Bayonet is a good M1905E1, scabbard is the standard M7 which is correct for WW2 Garand bayonets.
