Unknown cap with box car pins

Recommended Posts

French WW1 style and color overseas cap for wear by members of the 40 and 8 Society. It is an American Legion sub-group, I think. You often see their membership medals erroneously described as WW1 railway unit medals. "40 and 8" refers to the French railway boxcars in which Doughboys were transported. On the sides of the cars they were marked as being able to carry 40 men or 8 horses.

I have a lot of these. Apparently the 40/8 organization is still around but from the looks of the pins I have, I can't figure out exactly what they do. It seems to relate to nursing. They must have get togethers and give these pins out. Most of mine are fairly recent.
