Help ID this WWII DUI

Hello all! I am looking for help IDing this DUI. I've done some of my own searching and was not successful! This came from the estate of a WWII 12th Armor vet, who also served with the 100th ID, 397th IR at the end of the war. My best guess is this is a unit assigned to the 12th Armor, but just a guess. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks-Jeff

 

PS. Also note the odd marking. It looks like it is supposed to be Gemsco NY but the S is a 2 and the N is backward!

Found a few photos of these troops in the immediate post war occupation period, 119th Armd Eng Bn DI just might be the one they're wearing. Since it's a U.S. made one as opposed to those theater made German types where acustomed to seeing, you know those unauthorized but locally approved ones, perhaps it's a late war made one, made when the use of brass for DIs and a few other insignias where lifted.

These great photos come from the division's site, and it's worth noting that stateside photos do not show a DI being worn, thus the thought it was a late war adopted, if unofficially semi officially or officially.
