tdogchristy90 Posted November 4, 2017 Share #1 Posted November 4, 2017 Hey all, So I trust Dan on the authenticity of the helmet. I'm more curious about the story of the helmet. It appears to be from the 35th division and has an ID on the strap. Here's what I can't figure.... There is no H. Tibbs in the 130th machine gun Roster. The ID says "H. Tibbs 130th Inf" If he was infantry I find it strange that the "130" would also match the 130th Machine Gun of the 35th that's on the helmet. Maybe a type? I also see in one of the photos it looks like a circle was painted over, maybe a repaint? I trust the authenticity of the helmet. I'm more or less trying to pin down a "story" of why the helmet looks and is ID'd in the manner it is. http://griffinmilitaria.com/cgi-bin/imcart/display.cgi?item_id=22556&cat=21&page=1&search=&since=0&status=&title= Thanks. aef1917 Posted November 5, 2017 Share #2 Posted November 5, 2017 The insignia on the helmet is for the 140th Infantry Regiment, which matches with the Cpl. Harry Tibbs listed in the roster for the 140th. The infantry regiments of the 35th Division had insignia on their helmets during the summer of 1918, while some of the other elements of the division do not appear to have painted them until after the Armistice, just before Gen. Pershing inspected the division. It's entirely possible that this helmet got a new coat of paint and insignia at that time.

(The listing mentions the 130th machine gun, the writing on the helmet says "H. Tibbs 130th INF") I'll get in touch with Dan see what I can find out. At least you confirming a H Tibbs being in the 35th is much appreciated. Now I just need to figure out the "mix up" about the 130th vs 140th. Thank you. tdogchristy90 Posted November 5, 2017 Author Share #8 Posted November 5, 2017 Thanks a lot. I'm still unsure why the listing would mention the 130th. 130th is written on the strap apparently. So I'll have to see and find out.

aznation Posted November 5, 2017 Share #13 Posted November 5, 2017 On 29 June 1917, the regiment was reactivated for service in the First World War when it consolidated with elements of the 3rd Missouri to create the 140th Infantry Regiment in October 1917. The new regiment was assigned to the 35th Infantry Division. From Doniphan to Verdun: The Official History of the 140th InfantryBy Evan Alexander Edwards It's clear from this passage in the above mentioned book that the 130th and other units of the 35th Division fought alongside the men of the 140th Infantry of which Harry Tibbs belonged.
