Eagle's Nest Posted October 28, 2017 Share #1 Posted October 28, 2017 W.D Todd served first as an airman then, later, in the 28th Division. During his time in the ETO he kept a scrapbook of his photos and exploits, including a day trip to Berchtesgaden in October 1945. There, he surveyed the wrecked homes of Hitler, Goering and Bormann ("...they were placed so that Goering and Bormann could keep an eye on Hitler...and each other."). During his time on the Obersalzberg, Todd also visited the SS barracks where he cut this SS sleeve eagle from (most likely) a 1944 pea dot SS camo jacket. USCapturephotos Posted October 29, 2017 Share #12 Posted October 29, 2017 It's super that you have his description of his visit there. I'm curious about that leather vest he is wearing. Paul

Eagle's Nest Posted October 29, 2017 Author Share #17 Posted October 29, 2017 Vest appears to be shearling USAAF issue. Interesting - thanks, and that makes sense as he was in the air force before the army.
kammo-man Posted October 30, 2017 Share #18 Posted October 30, 2017 I had one of those many years ago. They split in the middle near the collar ! UUUUUgh.
Mr.Jerry Posted October 30, 2017 Share #19 Posted October 30, 2017 awesome souvenir, there are only a few real eagles on camo bit known, and none of them have this kind of provenance! I also like the "youth movement" mis ID of the SA sports badge. My uncle also wore a shearling vest like that while he was in France, I'll try and find some pics.
