gap Posted October 25, 2017 Share #1 Posted October 25, 2017 Did WW2 helmet liner chinstraps ever have a painted black steel buckle with patent number? I thought patent number was strictly on brass buckles. Thanks.
cerick1450 Posted October 25, 2017 Share #2 Posted October 25, 2017 I believe I have seen them in the past.
aef1917 Posted October 25, 2017 Share #3 Posted October 25, 2017 I'm pretty sure the black steel liner chinstraps are post-WWII manufacture.
cerick1450 Posted October 25, 2017 Share #4 Posted October 25, 2017 I looked, but could not find a thread from a while back, that discussed these. I am sure they were either very late war or just post war....
john k Posted October 25, 2017 Share #5 Posted October 25, 2017 If I recall correctly late ww2 would be Brass painted black, and post ww2 would be steel painted black. I know I have seen post war ones with the patent #, but I don't know if that may appear on any of the late war brass ones or not.
Burning Hazard Posted October 25, 2017 Share #6 Posted October 25, 2017 Yes they exist. I used to own one and it was a big mystery when it was made and by who. You can see more pics in this thread: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/201413-odd-m1-leather-liner-chinstrap/ Pat
john k Posted October 26, 2017 Share #7 Posted October 26, 2017 I looked and found I had one too. Same patent number, black painted brass buckle, brown rivet top, united carr marked rivets. Mine does have the two "tram" lines in the leather. Leather looks a bit on the thick side of average, but not overly so.
