NBG-1 United We Land - Naval Beach Group One established in 1948, Pacific Fleet, NAB Coronado, CA

The initial NBG-1 consisted of Headquarters Unit, Boat Unit ONE, which became Assault Craft Unit ONE, Amphibious Construction Battalion ONE, and Underwater Demolition Team ONE, which eventually shifted to the control of Naval Special Warfare Command. Additions to the organization have been Beachmaster Unit ONE (BMU-1) in 1949, Assault Craft Unit FIVE (ACU-5) in 1983, and Naval Beach Unit SEVEN (NBU-7) in 2012. With the addition of ACU-5 came the ability to conduct over-the-horizon assaults using the swift LCACs.

ACU-1 SURF RIDERS - Assault Craft Unit One

Assault Craft Unit 1 traces its roots to World War II as hundreds of LCUs were decommissioned, leaving 30 LCUs in the command of "Centralized Flotilla Command" in NAB Coronado known as LCU Squadron ONE. In July, 1947, a neighboring command, Boat Unit ONE, was created to command LCM-3s and LCVPs. In 1950, the two commands participated in the Battle of Inchon and in every amphibious operation of the Korean War afterward.

In 1963, the LCU Squadron ONE and Boat Unit ONE were merged to make Assault Craft Squadron 1 (ACS-1). In 1968, the CNO directed to have ACS-1 and its Assault Craft Divisions ELEVEN, TWELVE and THIRTEEN be disestablished, and reformed as Assault Craft Unit ONE (ACU 1).

Amphibious Group Three - Pacific Fleet

PhibGru 3 was probably active during World War II and was definitely active by 1945; at Eniwetok on 7 September 1945, revised orders directed USS Bayfield (APA-33) to Tacloban in the Philippines, where she arrived on 14 September and reported to Commander Amphibious Group 3 for duty in the occupation of Aomori, Japan. On 17 September Bayfield embarked soldiers and equipment of the U.S. 81st Infantry Division. The landings at Aomori took place according to schedule on 25 September 1945. With the outbreak of the Korean war in June 1950, USS Eldorado (AGC-11) was ordered to the Far East. As flagship for Rear Admiral L. A. Thackrey, Commander, Amphibious Group 3, she acted as standby for Mount McKinley (AGC-7) during the invasion of Inchon, Korea, and coordinated and controlled the logistics operations.

Amphibious Group Four (PHIBGRU 4) – USS Panamint (AGC-13), part of the Northern Attack Force, served as flagship of Rear Admiral Lawrence F. Reifsnider, Commander Amphibious Group 4, for the Battle of Okinawa in 1944. In a transfer of flags at San Juan, Puerto Rico, on 23 March 1954, Commander Amphibious Group 4 (COMPHIBGRU 4) shifted his flag to USS Adirondack (AGC-15). Commanded by Rear Admiral Eugene B. Fluckey from November 1960 to October 1961. Active in the 1960s, seemingly up to 1968–69, in the Atlantic Fleet.

  • 2 weeks later...

am interested in buying a command shoulder patch for one of my old commands where I was stationed as the Staff Supply Officer from August 1965 to August 1967. The name of the command was the Naval Operations Support Group, Pacific located on the US Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, California. In 1975 this command was renamed Commander, Naval Special Warfare Group ONE. I have seen the NAVSUPPGRUPAC patch on line on another site but not for sale. Can you find this patch and let me know where I can obtain it?

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Gregory S. Palazzolo, LCDR, SC, USN (retired)
