I think the hat itself makes the rest of the uniform look “casual”, not a nice look when officers stand next to officers from other branches. Also the buttons need to be polished brass. the enlisted needs to be slightly different than the officers, maybe branch specific piping on the o/s hat and officer braid on the officers. I’m sure most people couldn’t care less about my opinion but this is the appearance the uniform presents. Yeah, the crush cap while iconic is incredibly specific to the Army Air Corps later Army Air Forces. If the cavalry is allowed Stetsons with their Dress Blues, then sense would dictate that the crush cap belongs to aviation units. And in the current issued one the crown is too tall and stands up like a weird version of a German schirmmütze with none of the swagger. Just start issuing the crown stiffener and stop trying to pretend to be flyboys. Notice the first soldier with crown stiffener. Much sharper appearance. And I agree regarding gilt/brass buttons as well. The Army has had those on its coats since 1926, along with peaked lapels. I think it's a lovely subtle nod to the uniforms of yesteryear. As far as differentiating enlisted vs officers, collar disks vs BOS insignia and rank on shoulders already differentiate them plenty on a service uniform. And the second officer in the above photo is wearing the cuff mohair braid, another differentiating factor. Now if you want to bring back branch specific piping on the Dress blue I am ALL for that. Makes zero sense to for a uniform to be entirely piped in cavalry colors but to strap on a blue infantry cord or red artillery shoulder marks for an officer.

cavcon Posted December 23, 2024 #378 Posted December 23, 2024 The hat with the stiffener doesn’t look that bad. The crusher look just doesn’t work in today’s world. Something’s need to be left to history

The entire DoD grants an initial uniform allowance, for both enlisted and officer. Only enlisted continue receiving a replacement allowance, which is currently $403.07 in the Army. Sorry that I don't feel too bad that the Officers need to shell out some money for upkeep, seeing as a green 2LT makes more money than the platoon sergeant whose carrying them for most of their tenure.
Ontos Posted December 23, 2024 #380 Posted December 23, 2024 The stiffened cover looks much better - more professional. I like the pinks and greens. Very sharp!
268th C.A. Posted December 23, 2024 #381 Posted December 23, 2024 I agree, there not Army Air Corps, trying to make it look like a crusher just looks ugly on these style caps.
