MastersMate Posted October 11, 2017 Share #4 Posted October 11, 2017 Great looking rating badge...... A point that is nice about USN ratings is the naming process that changed in the 50s, and 60s for the CG. There was a long standing warrant officer specialty of Carpenter. When an enlisted rating for his assistant was created, it was named Carpenters' Mate. In the 1950s the USN started renaming warrant specialties as Technician or Specialist. The Machinist became the naval engineer. The warrant specialty in the USN and USCG that did not change was Boatswain. Today the old naming system carries on with the warrant Boatswain and enlisted Boatswains Mate and the Aerographer and Aerographers Mate..

Interestingly enough, even though Warrants ( in the Navy), got new "Official" designators, they still went by their old titles.
