navyman, Those two right arm rates are gorgeous. The crow in the MUc is pretty different from most of the other bullion rates here.

I haven't seen a bullion 2nd class crow (MM2) before...that is fantastic!

While the Aviation Pilot rating badges are skyrocketing out of my realm of affordability, the next best thing (to me) are the rates of the crewmen who flew with these men and Naval Aviators.

I just won this rate and am anxious to get my hands on it:

Bullion CPO Aviation Pilot with gold chevrons and wings on khaki. Sold recently on ebay. I have never seen gold chevrons on a khaki rate before. Is this combination unusual?

Fritz,

Nice pilot rates. Did you win this one. I was bidding on this one, and felt the same thing. If I was 100% sure I would of went a lot higher.

Fritz,

Questionable.

Why don't you call John Stacey?

The gold/blue one is mine Jason, but the gold/khaki one was way out of my comfort range. I sure would like to have it though. Have you seen gold chevrons on khaki before?

Dan, I only have an address for John Stacy. Do you have a phone number? Have you ever seen gold chevrons on khaki? It certainly is an interesting looking rate.

Fritz,

That's why I didn't go high in the bidding. But on the other hand I have a feeling that it very well could be good. I've never seen this combination before, but that doesn't mean it wasn't used. I would imagine if the pilot want this he could have worn it as long he earn the gold chevrons.

I finally connected with the one chief petty officer rating badge I’ve lacked in completing my CPO rating badge collection.

Shown is the Airship Rigger chief petty officer rating in forestry green with red chevrons and silver bullion.post-769-1316195986.jpg

My example is from the CWO Lester Tucker collection. It was also examined by John Stacey, the author of United States Navy Rating Badges and Marks (1833 to 2008).

The Airship Rigger rating specialty was authorized from 1944 to 1948. After 1948 USN airship rigger personnel wore the Specialist (A) mark from 1948-55, after that point they were designated Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (A) until the USN airship program was disbanded.

In a May 1947 memorandum the navy authorized:

“Changes to existing uniform regulations incorporated in the 1947 Uniform Regulations of 2 May 1947 extended the wearing of greens to all other Chief Petty Officers:

’6.1. Designation of Uniforms. Chief petty officers (designated naval aviation pilots and serving in pilot status) are required to possess the aviation winter working uniform. All other chief petty officers assigned to duty in aviation commands may wear the aviation winter working uniform when that uniform is prescribed in the uniform of the day for aviation personnel, but shall not be required to do so.’

Paragraph 9-80 prescribed for the green rating badge a forestry green background with blue eagle, specialty mark and chevrons.”

While silver bullion was not authorized with aviation green (forestry green) or khaki rating badges, many chief petty officers ordered and wore them with their green and khaki uniform coats.

The “no silver bullion” regulation was ignored so widely that the navy came out with the following memorandum in June 1948:

BuPers Circ. Ltr. 106-48 of 9 June 1948 says this: "... the following unauthorized wearing of certain rating badges to be corrected: The authorized aviation winter working uniform rating badge consists of blue eagle, specialty mark and chevrons; the silver eagle and specialty mark with red or blue chevrons sometimes worn with this uniform is not authorized."

I am tickled.

I would say that is the BEST USN rate I have ever seen!

I live about 10 minutes from Lakehurst, NJ. I keep hoping something like this will turn up at a local estate sale.
